Orchids
Papua New Guinea has a rich orchid heritage with more than 3200 species. With this figure our country boast of being the home of 10 percent of the world’s orchid species. These colorful species of orchids defines and forms the striking beauty of our country, which, makes us unique and special. The orchid species varies so much from the Lowlands (coastal areas) up to the Highlands given their altitude and climatic differences. Many local botanist have very attractive orchid gardens and collections but sometimes it is worth seeing them in their natural settings.

For orchid enthusiasts we have special programs which features locations with abundant species of orchids. These programs can be taken individually or combined depending on your time and budget. We can also assist by planning a suitable itinerary based on your preferences. We are at your convenience to arrange your trip to these sites as well as other sites around the country.

KIKORI ORCHID TOUR 6 Days

This tour features the spectacular orchids of remote Kikori River region, a very beautiful WWF conservation area with unique wilderness. With its 2,000 plus species of orchids, this area is interestingly located in one of the largest remaining tracts of undisturbed tropical forests in the Southern Hemisphere. See one of the huge orchid gardens & its magnificent displays around Tubo Eco Tourism Lodge in Lake Kutubu by this local botanist who received first price (award) for the 2005 International Orchids Spectacular in Port Moresby. Accommodation include this traditional style house, high on a ridge with a commanding view of Lake Kutubu. For orchid enthusiast, this would be a great opportunity to visit this area, as we say “seeing is believing”.

HIGHLANDS ORCHID TOUR 7 Days

Enga Province is abundantly blessed with varied species of orchids as we consider that as a perfect base for orchid enthusiasts. Enga alone has more than 1,000 identified species of orchids, where most of them are very rare ones not found in other provinces and countries. As Engan’s are natural botanist they have turned their skills into economic activity thus there are many sites to see orchids both grown and natural. Like the Waiyep Orchids and Rhododendron Gardens Village Resort in Laigam, with 10, 000 plants, and Kumul Adventure Resort Hotel.

Wilderness Orchid Lodge is a true wilderness, built out of traditional and bush materials and is situated within mountain ranges, thick jungle, and the only way to get there is through a 1 hour trekking.

Established purposely to expose and offer some of the very unique species of orchid in their true vibrant and natural settings , giving you the opportunity for look out, flower picking and naming plants, with the expert of our local guides. Wilderness Orchid Lodge is highly recommended because it suits this tour. For accommodation we have included both Wilderness Orchid Lodge & Kumul Adventure Resort Hotel.

Both programs are concluded with Papua New Guinea’s National Botanical Garden, located at the University of Papua New Guinea in the nations capital, Port Moresby. It has one of the largest orchid collection (with more than 3,000 species) in the Southern Hemisphere.

Other alternatives activities would be arranged but that is up to you, weather to take it or not.

War Relics

See World War II relics and spare a thought for the thousand allied Australians, British and Japanese and other forces. It’s an emotional experience and heartbreaking for those who have lost their loved ones, fallen heroes, and comrades when visiting many of the cemeteries around the country. The wreckage, remains, local stories and the landscape gives you a real impression of how tough the battle was fought in some part of this country. We arrange memorial tours to almost anywhere the battle has been fought, or visits to memorial military museums, and many more.

We would arrange for special tours during ANZAC day from April 20th to April 30th 2006 at affordable and budget price, suitable for World War II veterans and their family and other interested travelers. We encourage you to book early due to limited space available. (For more information contact us = web link)

Lake Kutubu & Skull Cave
Lake Kutubu in the Southern Highlands Province is a declared National Park in the country and is located within World Wide Fund (WWF) conservation area. This lake is the largest in the country, which expands at approximately 17 km and 7 km in length and width respectively. Towering mountain peaks stretches right around the lake, creating a perfect enclosure for many beautiful small islands, with of 2 large ones, namely Yokopo and Wasame Island. It is the home of 12 rare endemic species of fish that are not found anywhere else in the world. Kutubu is truly unique and special because everything from culture and tradition to natural environment are strictly preserved and conserved. Major oil and gas project developments in this area has no significant influence on them, they still live a traditional life. It is a male dominated society where both male and female do not share accommodation, most household responsibility lies within the women, including fishing, gardening and weaving sago. In a village, the entire male population live in, what is referred to as Hausman – Traditional Long Haus, of more than 100 meters in length, so as the women who have their own Hausmeri.

Discover this remarkable place as it offers so many things from adventure to culture and many other interesting activities. If you choose to, we can arrange for you to live with locals as long as you wish to stay and study their live style. As sago is their traditional and staple food, see for yourself the tireless process of sago weaving or go fishing in dugout canoes. Imagine the whole new experience awaiting. Take an outboard motor ride on the lake to some traditional and ancient burial sites on the islands. It is customary for them, not to bury dead relatives in soil, instead they place the body inside dugout canoe hull. The hull, like a coffin box is then place in the cave, after some years when the body rots, the skull and skeletons are removed, carefully arranging them cave walls. Explore these Human Skull (Bebere Cave, Kosame Cave) in limestone cave just beside Lake Kutubu. Butterflies and birds of paradise are plentiful around this beautiful, peaceful place and the naturally friendly people live traditional live. You can swim, see orchids, visit villages or just enjoy the scenery, or relax at the Tubo Lodge located in the middle of the lake. We can extend your tour to the ‘Mighty Beaver Fall’, it’s another Nicaragua Fall in Papua New Guinea.

Traditional Salt Making Process
Its traditional and its real. The use of traditional salt by Highlands people goes back to time . Its importance was seen in the areas of trade, wealth, preservative, and meal. Despite some slight distinction, traditional salt is not different from modern salt. The process involved in producing traditional salt is interestingly complicated. We offer you a unique opportunity to see something really traditional at the Wilderness Orchid Lodge in Enga province. These would feature traditional fire making, then to mumu (ground oven), where the salt produced would then be sampled with tasty local vegetables and meat.
