Country Overview

Papua New Guinea lies entirely within the tropics, just south of the equator, and is located 160km to the north of Australia. Being the second largest island country in the world its landmass encompasses the eastern part of New Guinea Islands plus some 600 other islands and beautiful atolls and coral reefs. The country is dominated by a central spine of mountains, the Owen Stanley Range, with many peaks over 4000m (13, 120 ft). Three quarters of Papua New Guinea is covered by tropical rainforests, and the remainder is made up of delta plains, flat grasslands and mangrove swamps. Principle rivers include the Fly, Sepik and Ramu.

Formerly a colony of Australia, Papua New Guinea became an independent nation in 1975 but still has strong ties with Australia. Adopting the Westminster form of government, Papua New Guinea is a member of British Commonwealth and United Nations. It has became a modern nation with an economy based mainly on resources such as gold, copper, oil, gas, copra, timber, tea, coffee, cocoa, fisheries and tourism.

A country with the most unique cultural system on earth with over 800 ethnic language groups has a population of five million people. Even with 21 provinces there are no similarities among and within the inhabitants where it makes Papua New Guinea an amazing land. The people are predominantly Melanesians, with some Polynesians and Micronesians influences. Subsistence farming is the way of life for the vast majorities living in rural areas, creating ammonic relationship with their natural environment. Many parts of the country remain unchanged by time and technology where traditional life styles are still vibrant and are being preserved future generations to come.

There is so much and unimaginable things to discover in Papua New Guinea. Its rugged mountains, valleys, fast flowing rivers, virgin rain forests and islands untouched by commercial development, provide unlimited adventure. Treasures of unusual artifacts, museums, galleries and war memorial sites and cemeteries reflect the life style, history and nationhood of the country. Trekking the Kokoda Trail or Mt Wilhelm , enjoying the stunning white coral beaches lapped by sapphire waters, birds watching, and canoeing the mighty Sepik River are just of the attraction.
